FLIPPING FILIPINOS:  FINDING NEW NARRATIVES THROUGH DOCUMENTARY FILMSOS:  FINDING NEW NARRATIVES THROUGH DOCUM

Stephanie presents clips from several of her documentaries that focus on Filipino Americans and their history in America as well as their personal stories.  To frame her speech, she begins with footage and commentary from SANDAAN, a 2006 documentary film that examines the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904 and the propaganda generated at the "Philippine reservation"  to "sell" the Philippines and Filipinos to America.  "Ever since those images of wild, naked tribes and 'little brown brothers' were created, Filipinos in America have worked to correct and truthfully reveal who we truly are," says Stephanie.

MY MOTHER & OTHER WAR BRIDES OF WWII

This talk focuses on the little-known story of America's war brides from World War II.  Some 500,000 foreign women from 50 different countries married American armed forces personnel serving overseas in, during and after WWII and came to America to make a new life with their GI husbands.  Stephanie's informative presentation begins with a historical perspective on the war bride history, giving anecdotes and facts that can only be termed unbelievable or amazing.  She then focuses on her mother's personal account of her war bride story as a set up for her 9th documentary, STRANGE LAND: MY MOTHER'S WAR BRIDE STORY (2006).

MULTICULTURAL  MANDATES:  STORIES THAT FOUND ME

Stephanie, a lover of history who knows a good story when she hears one, has found herself drawn to  stories that are outside her own cultural background.  In this talk, she brings three fascinating tales and explains why they have drawn her.  The American sub-culture and multicultural world of cockfighters and gamefowl breeders; the little-known tale of how abducted Korea potters influenced Japan's ceramic heritage; and the 1898 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy by the United States this time told by Native Hawaiians themselves.  In each of these tales, Stephanie found universal themes and relevant connections to our world today.
