AN UNCOMMON KINDNESS - The Story of Father Damien

This one-hour biography, narrated by actor Robin Williams, presents Father Damien DeVeuster as an important 19th century world figure.  Damien, who started as a simple man from the farmlands of Belgium, became a missionary, boldly standing at the dividing line between the inhumane treatment of those with leprosy, or Hansen Disease, and the modern-day embrace of  human compassion.

It reveals a man of extraordinary courage and compassion who for 16 years lived and worked among thousands of outcasts, mostly Native Hawaiians, who were banished to Kalaupapa, an isolated Hawaiian peninsula on the island of Molokai because they were afflicted with leprosy, then considered the most dread disease on earth.

Modern-day residents of Kalaupapa express their own feelings about Damien and the meaning of sacrifice to our times.
